Lot 1774 Sale 112 Aust. Commonwealth - Patterns & Proofs

George V, Royal Mint, London, uniface patterns for a modified obverse for the florin and shilling of the Dominions and Colonies, by Sir E.B.Mackennal. The florin (11.06g) design with minor modification was adopted for the Canberra Commemorative of 1927. The shilling (5.47g) design was never adopted. The only other pair known is in the Royal Mint Collection in Wales. Sold together with a handwritten letter dated 1926 by Sir Robert Johnston to Mackennal concerning the modified portrait of the King, also a letter from Dr Colin Mackennal Kraay to Mr Baldwin (uncle Fred). Toned, uncirculated and excessively rare. (2)

George V, Melbourne Mint specimen set of florin, shilling, sixpence and threepence, 1916M, with black leatherette and plush blue presentation case. The threepence brilliant, sixpence with horizontal hairline mark behind head, shilling with multiple die breaks on the reverse and die axis at 45 degrees, lightly toned and florin with two obverse contact marks, light golden tone, all four probably have been dipped of the deep toning associated with sets kept in the presentation case, the threepence overall like a brilliant proof, the others more frosted with tiny brilliant die flashes, nearly FDC and very rare. (4)
