Ferris, Parramatta 27th August 1901, for his past three years service in the New South Wales Parliament which practically heralded the Commonwealth of Australia, and a request that he accept a 'Purse of Sovereigns', a beautifully coloured document with text in calligraphy, signed by six individual subscribers from Parramatta Council. Sir W.J.Lyne K.C.M.G., Premier of N.S.Wales; Citizens of Parramatta and Districts Welcome Home to our Returned Soldiers Banquet menu with one of the toasts proposed by W.J.Ferris, Esq., M.P.; various photos (6) relating to W.J.Ferris and family including one of his flag draped coffin, military helmet atop, being taken from his home to a horse drawn hearse; contemporary print of a colonial period coloured drawing of a river scene featuring sheep grazing beside tree with small sail boat on the river and a church spire in the distance, mapped with cardboard surround; also an affectionate 4-page handwritten letter from George Jamieson at Camp Mudgee, 14th February 1876, to his daughter Ellenor (sic) on the occasion of her 17th birthday (she would later marry W.J.Ferris). Many items with foxing or faded, the letter with splits on the folds and some tears but still easily read, otherwise fine - very fine. (15)

Van Diemen's Land, indenture on vellum dated 15th March 1828, for release of fifty acres of land and dwelling house at Clarence Plains, to John McKoy, farmer, and his wife Mary of the one part and Joseph Mawle and William Mawle, licenced victuallers, of the second part, also includes receipt of cash and Bills of Exchange to the value of one hundred and fifty pounds from the Mawles to the McKoys, all relevant areas signed by both parties and witnessed by Gamaliel Butler, included on the document is a declaration made by Mary McKoy to the Supreme Court Chief Justice of Van Diemen's Land, John Lewes Pedder, and signed by him, also recorded and signed by John Beamont, Registrar of Deeds. Very fine.

Van Diemen's Land, land rental, in vellum to Thomas Williams, dated 12th December in first year of Our reign (QV 1837), for a parcel of land in Launceston (with detailed specifications of the various boundaries) being an area of sixteen acres three roods and twenty one perches, with annual rental of five pounds and two shillings, with seal of Van Diemen's Land affixed and registered on 16 April 1839 and the signature of (Sir) John Franklin, Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land and that of John Montague, Colonial Secretary, also marked as enrolled and recorded in the Supreme Court of Van Diemen's Land on 27th August 1841 and signed by the Registrar, W.Sorell. Normal ageing, otherwise fine and scarce.

Van Diemen's Land, Charge Sheet on parchment dated 15 January 1842, made by Attorney General Thomas Welsh, stating that Richard Singleton, labourer, did steal one gun, a pair of trousers and one shirt being the goods of Robert Johnston, signed by Thomas Welsh, at the left edge is marked, 'Plea not Guilty' and on the reverse is written, 'Found Not Guilty'. Very fine.

Van Diemen's Land, letter dated 14 March 1849 from Roderick McDonald, in H.M. Gaol, Richmond, to Mr Young, Female Hiring Depot at Ross requesting that the recipient forward on his letter, in which he states he has been in prison for 16 weeks and is totally penniless and unable to pay the fine of ten pounds, together with a recommendation by Mr Young, the instigator of the charge against McDonald, that he be released from prison; also letter dated 20 March 1849 from said Mr Young to the Chief Police Magistrate, Hobart making such a recommendation for issuing an Order to Richmond Gaol for the release of Mr McDonald. Ragged edge on second letter where the page has been torn from a book, otherwise fine - very fine. (2 letters)

Van Diemen's Land, several items of correspondence from 1840s, mostly relating to policing matters in the Richmond District, noted one to Chief District Constable J.Bryon at Richmond from the District Constable of Jerusalem regarding stolen property and action to be taken, also noted several letters to Major C.Schaw (see footnote), Police Magistrate for Richmond, including a finely penned 2-page letter by Elizabeth Naylor regarding the circumstances of her eviction from premises at Pittwater by John Gwynn, various other letters. Van Diemen's Land, a 2-page letter to Major Schaw, Chief Police Magistrate, Richmond by William Gangell of Pittwater (see footnote), relating to the infidelity of his second wife Mary Gangell (nee Leigh), a convict transported for larceny with a life sentence, who had obtained a Ticket of Leave, and requesting assistance to curtail her scandalous behaviour of having an affair that was affecting him and their children, signed by William Gangell. Ink faded with age, otherwise fine and a rare and historic document written by the first man to be married in Tasmania.
