Description

Testimonial to Colonel William J. Ferris, Parramatta 27th August 1901, for his past three years service in the New South Wales Parliament which practically heralded the Commonwealth of Australia, and a request that he accept a 'Purse of Sovereigns', a beautifully coloured document with text in calligraphy, signed by six individual subscribers from Parramatta Council. Printed on card suitable for framing, foxing on board document and some small loss of paper in signature area, age toning, otherwise very fine.

A request was made to Parramatta Council that a public meeting of ratepayers be called to further a project to give a testimonial to Mr W.J.Ferris in recognition of his services to the electorate. At a council meeting, the Mayor refused on the grounds that it was politically motivated. There was considerable discussion, arguments and finally commotion when Alderman Toohey, one of the signatories on the testimonial, refused to desist from his request that the public meeting be called.

With transcript of the newspaper report on this incident.
