Description

Colony of NSW Conditional Pardon, number 39/290 named to James Watson who arrived in the Colony in 1818 under sentence of Transportation for Life, pardon issued and signed by Colonel Snodgrass CB Acting Captain General and Governor in Chief of Her Majesty's Territory of New South Wales, dated First day of February 1838, also signed by Geo:Gipps (Major Sir George Gipps, Governor of NSW 1838-1846). Ink written sections faded, otherwise fine.

James Watson, born 1797, stocking weaver, sentenced to Transportation for Life at Essex Quarter Sessions. Departed on convict transport ship Ocean 2 under Master, Captain Remmington, departing from Spithead 21 August 1817 and reaching Port Jackson, NSW on 10 January 1818 after a voyage of 142 days. On 16 January he was distributed for service at Windsor. After receiving his Conditional Pardon James Watson later was appointed a Special Constable with the NSW Police.
