The Mercantile Bank of Australia Limited, Melbourne, one hundred pounds, dated 1st May 1890, (date fully printed), not numbered, proof, on paper, unsigned, no watermark, no imprint, vignette to right of Greek God Mercury with caduceus, to left castle, value areas in corners as two different geometrical designs stated in numerals and words, in rectangular border, states below, 'Promise to pay the Bearer ONE HUNDRED POUNDS Sterling on Demand Value received at Melbourne 1st May 1890, For the Mercantile Bank of Australia Limited', in ink on front 'unfinished work', black on white, (Vort-Ronald, comments on bank and p.171, and Ã…â€Å‣100 specimen note discussed, Tomlinson p.70 illustrates a complete Ã…â€Å‣100 note with numbers and signature positions and also a 100 undertype). Wilkinson and entered by Jno Forrest, printed on uncertain possibly watermarked paper, with imprint on base frame, 'Perkins Bacon & Co, London, Patent Hardened Steel Plate', with vignettes of female with shield in oval top left tablet, and top right oval tablet with 5, with centre block in green FIVE over five circles, green and brown on white, (Vort-Ronald, p.175-183 on bank, type two, cf. Fig.184 as one pound). Folds and creases, five small pin-holes, with heavy smoke tone, otherwise nearly fine, extremely rare and the earliest of the three known specimens.

The Royal Bank of Australia, one pound, Sydney, Feb 21, 1848, (184 printed), not numbered, hand signed by Manager, Director and Accountant, Interest bearing note, printed on watermarked paper probably with [ROYAL BANK OF] AUSTRALIA with a frame, with imprint on centre of bottom, 'W.H.Bruce Engraver and Printer, Trump St., King St, Cheapside', with vignette of modified Royal Arms with supporters and St. Andrew, all within rectangular spiral border, on front of note, 'Promise to pay the Bearer on the Twenty first day of May 1848 at Sydney the Sum of ONE POUND Sterling with Interest to that day at the rate of five Per Cent Per Annum', also in background in large letters 'POST NOTE ONE POUND', black on white, (Vort-Ronald, p.208-209 on bank, This Note illustrated as Fig. 217 on p.209). Folds and creases, with unobtrusive pinholes from folds and small hole lower left, some aging tone, otherwise good fine, extremely rare and possibly unique.
