New Zealand. Group of Six: Military Cross (GVR); Military Medal (GVR); British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal; British War Medal 1939-45; New Zealand War Service Medal. Second Lieut Frederick Harold Mintroom NZMGC. M.C. and last two medals unnamed others impressed. Court mounted for display. Very fine. $ Together with extract from official history describing the award of the military medal, brief service details showing promotion to Major in 1940. A rare group only thirteen MC/MM combinations to New Zealanders during the first World War. M.C.L.G. 2 April 1919: 'For conspicuous gallantry and initiative east of Le Quesnoy on 4 November 1918. He commanded a section of machine guns attached to an assaulting battalion of infantry and led forward two guns with the leading waves of the right leading company in the attack. By engaging strong enemy opposition he assisted the advance of infantry and he took up a well chosen position on the objective gained.' M.M. L.G. 14 December 1917.

Broun 35th Regt/Capt 1st Waikato Regt. First medal impressed, second medal engraved, renamed. Generally very fine. $ Together with: Bestowal certificate for French award (19 May 1917); photograph of recipient in uniform wearing awards, detailed obituary, extracts from Who's Who in New Zealand; Dictionary of Biography; The Cyclopedia of New Zealand (includes phtograph of recipient) copy of letters relating to French award (which was awarded for assistance to French nationals in INdia during the mutiny sixty years previously); Biography from: The Collector', copy of late application for the New Zealand War Medal and accompanying statement. Broun, Thomas (1838-1919) was born and educated in Edinburgh and served in the Crimean War. He had a commission in the 35th Regiement in the Indian Mutiny after which he was invalided with cholera and retired (1862). Having married he came to New Zealand and in the Waikato War held a commission in the 1st Waikato Regiment. (Major N.Z.M. 1905). After the War he farmed at Opotiki for a few years, was teacher under the Auckland Education Board (1876-88). Boun was Governemnt Entomologist (1894-1905). For many years after 1866 he studied New Zealand insects and hge described about 2,000 species in his manual of New Zealand Coleoptera, and in British scientific publications. Broun was first drawn towards the study of entomology by observing in Burma. He died on 24 August 1919.
