RAAF Diamond Jubilee Sword, 1981, by Wilkinson Sword of England, based on a House of Lancaster sword of the twelfth century, blade is 43 inches in length and embossed with the first aircraft used by the RAAF, aircraft used during WWII and present day jet aircraft, crossguard decorated with the RAAF eagle, numbered 030 on blade edge and with matching certificate number 030 of only 100 issued. Some scuffing on timber handle, otherwise extremely fine and very scarce.

The first seven items are housed in packets describing item, origin and the name of the Australian soldier who retrieved the item. Very good - fine. (11)

War diary WWII, Collins Service Diary with fly page marked 'Gunner Mascord. R.E./R.H.Q./2/1 Field Regiment. A.I.F.', calendars for years 1941-1943, first entries are poems, 1-6-1942 'Somewhere in New Guinea'; 4.6.1942 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels' by Sgt:Beros 2/16 Battalion. A.I.F. with full page colour sketch beside; 7.6.1942 A.I.F. Abroad 'A Soldiers Dream' by Allan Miller; 1.9.1942 Gnr. E.Gray. 'Salute To The Choice' New Guinea; these are followed by entries beginning on 5 September 1942 at the Army camp in West Maitland, New South Wales, outlining Gunner Mascord's pre embarkation training, his trip from Brisbane, Queensland via Townsville to Port Moresby in New Guinea and thereafter his daily routine, his views of the local life and flora and fauna in New Guinea, one example written on 29 September 'Flies, mosquitoes, ants, spiders etc bad' and the next day 'Flies unbearable.', then again on 3 November 'Bloody mosquitoes make life really miserable!'; in a number of entries he makes mention of severe pain he is suffering caused by varicose veins and his refusal to return to Australia for treatment rather preferring to stay with his unit in the field; he relates of the air raids, the war's progress, casualties and a continual reference to how much he misses his girlfriend and on 13 October 1942 he mentions his proposal by letter and his beloved Ivy's acceptance on 27 October 1942 when he writes 'Ivy is very happy re prospects to marry me'; on 5 December 1942 he records 'Picked out as a commando today, start training tomorrow'; the entry on 6 January 1943 states 'Designed cover, illustrated 3 jokes for Regimental Book, the unit are going to publish it for me / title:- 2/1 Field Regt. Abroad'; on 20 January he writes that he has transferred by plane to Dobadura air strip and the last diary entry is dated 26 January 1943; throughout the diary is illustrated with colour and black and white sketches including various graves of AIF men killed in action and examples of some postage stamps of Papua and also New Guinea; a unique illustrated document beautifully penned in a calligraphy style in ink, not surprisingly when one considers the writer's pre war occupation. Good very fine. NX10171 Gunner Ramon Enslin Ernest Mascord, born 23Mar1913 at Waterloo, NSW, Signwriter and Duco Sprayer; Enl.19Mar1940 at Paddington into 2/3 Field Regt; Emb.14May1940 for service in Middle East; 10Sep1941 Cpl; Emb.15Sep1942 for service in New Guinea; 27Dec1942 admitted to AGH with varicose veins; AWL on numerous occasion in and out of Australia all resulting in fines or confinement and on the last occasion, after returning from New Guinea, he was AWL from Narellan camp in Sydney for several months resulting in his arrest on 30May1944; 30Jun1944 he underwent a medical assessment and considered unsuitable for further service due to anxiety and the partial amputation of two fingers of his right hand; Disch.03Aug1944 as Medically Unfit ex 2/1 Field Regt after total service of 1,281 days including service in Middle East 4May1940 - 31Mar1942 and New Guinea 15Sep1942-16Aug1943.
