Wren 'as one who served King and country in the World War of 1939-45 and gave his life'; silver container, engraved 'Holiday Pairs Won by E. Wren 21.4.24', fine small enamelled badges. Eric William Gregg Wren was born at Crookwell NSW in 1889. Educated at Cootamundra and Sydney University (Economics). He was employed with the N.S.W. Railways and was a well known competition tennis player with the Strathfield Tennis Club. He enlisted on the outbreak of war in 1914 and departed Australia on 17 August 1914 as a Corporal in the 3rd Battalion A.I.F. Promoted to Sergeant in Egypt he was in the original landing on 25 April 1915. Wounded twice during the campaign he was commissioned in the field, eventually being promoted to Captain. He also took part in the attack and counter attack on Lone Pine. He was one of the last to embark from Gallipoli, leaving the frontline trenches at 2.40am on 20 December 1915. Serving as Company Commander of 'A' Company he was severely wounded by gunshot in the right arm and elbow on 23June1916 during the Battle of Pozieres. The arm was eventually amputated. He was repatriated to Australia on 10 September 1917. Upon return Captain Wren resumed his sporting activities, teaching himself to play tennis left handed, he was favourably reported in the sporting papers of the post war period. In 1935 Capt. Wren wrote 'from Randwick to Hargicourt' the Regimental History of 3 Bn. A.I.F.
