Squadron Leader Thomas Ward servedas a helicopter pilot in 9 Squadran RAAF, in Vietnam from 23 April 1968 to 1 April 1969. DFC C.G. 16 October 1969 'in recognition of his courage and devotion to duty whilst senior flight commander with No.9 Squadron during operational service in Vietnam'. Together with research and extracts from 'Mission Vietnam' and 'Vietnam Veterans - A Record of Service' which details in full the recommendation for the award, which was chiefly earned for leading numerous successful insertions and extractions of long range reconnaisance patrols.
