Ghuznee 1839 Medal. Thomas Wingate Lieut. 2nd or Queen's Royal Regiment. Named, engraved on rim and on reverse. Slight edge knock, and missing suspender otherwise very fine. Ghuznee Medal, 24mm miniature medal, struck in gold with full size straight bar suspender - named engraved on reverse, similr to full-sized medal. Ghuznee Medal - conventional sized miniature medal with scroll suspender, unnamed. Together with extract from 'The Dictionary of Australian Artists.' Naval General Service Medal 1793 - no bar Geo.Thos. Wingate Commander R.N. Renamed, engraved. Good very fine. $ Wingate, Thomas W. (1807-1869), sketcher, amateur photographer and army officer, was the son of a captain in the Royal Navy. He entered the British Army as an ensign in May 1826 and served in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) (1828-32) and India (1835-42). His sketch of the fortress of Ghuznee, which as company commander in the 2nd Queen's Royal Regiment of Foot he had stormed in July 1839, was published as a lithograph in London that same year. On his retirement from the army (probably in the late 1840s), Wingate came to Sydney; in 1854 he is recorded as major commanding the 1st New South Wales Rifle Volunteers. He married Eleanor Terry, third daughter of Richard Rouse and widow of John Terry, and they lived at Percy Lodge, 22 Wylde Street, Potts Point. After 1862 they also lived in the Terry home at Rouse Hill. Wingate visited Hobart Town, Tasmania, early in 1866; he died in New South Wales in May 1869.
