Lot 3958 Sale 109 Ancient Coin Weights

Syria - Phoenicia, haematite weight for half a shekel or maybe 10 giru (Shraga Qedar attributes as 15-11th century B.C.), or 900 B.C. or earlier (Malter), 17x9mm, weight (3.89 g), made in the form of a cylinder with bulging centre, holed for carrying a later innovation (Munz Zentrum XLV, November 25, 1981 [lot 33]); another similar haematite weight as a circular stone shape with thick centre (18mm diameter 8mm thickness), weight (3.32 g), could be a light half shekel or more likely a 10 giru weight (Munz Zentrum XLV, November 25, 1981 [lot 34 similar]). Fine - very fine, very scarce. (2)

Phoenician or Roman weight, (1st - 2nd century A.D.), struck on a heart shaped flan in bronze, 29x23x16 mm, (54.02 g) (of Roman weight of two ounces or two unciae, or four shekels?), (see Munz Zentrum Sale XLV, 25 November 1981 [lot 100] similar example realised 330DM). Two incuse strokes across the weight signify two unciae, very fine and rare.

Byzantine weight, 5th-7th Century, A barrel-shaped spherical commercial weight, 9x10 mm, bronze Sextula (1/6 ounce) weight (4.73 g); cylindrical with a slightly bulging center and with a flat top and bottom. The top bears a center punch flanked by the incuse cut engraved letter **G* a symbol = 1/6 uncia or 3 scripula, similar letters as traces on the bottom side, (cf.Bendall P.8 for symbol and p.25 for similar larger weights and Munz Zentrum Sale XXXVII [8th November 1979, lot 4145 for symbol). Some original metal showing through, very fine and rare.

Byzantine weights, 5th-7th Century, A group of weights, including barrel-shaped, 15 mm x 18 mm, bronze quarter Uncia (quarter ounce) weights (6.68, 5.95, 6.24 g); cylindrical with a slightly bulging center and with a flat top and bottom. The top bears a center punch flanked by the incuse cut letters partially visible; also includes square block (28.12 g) for one uncia (needing conservation for letters etc); together with ball shaped weight (23.37 g), and several other shaped ornamental objects with holes or loops to carry on a chain? (11.41, 2.23 g), (cf.Bendall P.25, 37 similar weights). Green and brown earthen patina with some original metal showing through, nearly fine - very fine all scarce or rare. (7)

Islamic glass weights, glass weight light blue green in colour impressed into the glass a circular Arabic legend on the obverse, Abbasid or Fatamid period 7th-12th century A.D., for use in Egypt, thickness 5mm, weight (5.99 g) = 31 qirit, (cf.Munz Zentrum, Auction Sale XXVII, November 8, 1979 [lot 4229]); another (2.89 g), 20mm diameter thickness 5mm, featured with a portait as the central motif (Homer?), Of Greek or Roman style of 2-5th century A.D., (a denarius weight of early 3rd century ?).
