The Bank of Adelaide, Adelaide, one pound, dated 1 June 1892, (date fully printed), numbered 759493, perforated 'CANCELLED' twice across note, signatures present but uncertain, imprint of 'Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co Ld Engravers, London', vignette in centre of woman facing wearing wreath, and ornamental shield tablets with '1' in top corners, and 'ONE' in block lower corners, all within rectangular ornate border, states below, 'I Promise to pay the Bearer on Demand at our Office here the Sum of One Pound Sterling Value received, Adelaide 1st June 1892, for The Bank of Adelaide', 'ONE' in yellow across note, back with bank building in centre, '1' in corners, legend above and below 'THE BANK OF ADELAIDE' and 'ONE POUND', yellow and black on white/blue brown and green on white, (Vort-Ronald, Type three, comments on bank and type p.52-56, This Note illustrated Fig. 53 [p.56], see Nicholson Sale 49 [lot 1516, for similar cancelled note]). A few folds and creases, with crease stains etc., otherwise good fine and very rare, being one of the few surviving issued cancelled banknotes.

Bank of New South Wales, one pound, not dated, (18 printed), uniface proof, not numbered, on card, with imprint in centre of bottom, 'Perkins Bacon & Co., London, Patent Hardened Steel Plate', with vignettes of female seated with produce and in top corners oval framed tablet with 'FIVE', all within rectangular ornate spiral border with words 'NEW SOUTH WALES' at base, black on white, (Vort-Ronald, p.67-85 on bank, Type Seven (f) and similar note [banknote] illustrated as Fig.78). Reverse stains in two corners, corners trimmed at angle, otherwise extremely fine and very rare.

Bank of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales, ten pounds, dated 1 Oct. 1904, (19- printed), numbered 29955, signed by E.H. Finch and entered by Pearson, imprint of 'Charles Skipper & East London', vignette in centre of woman seated, ship to left and sheep to right, ornamental round tablet with 10 in upper corners and TEN in tablet of circles lower left, all within rectangular ornate spiral border, states below, 'On Demand I promise to pay to the Bearer TEN POUNDS Sterling, Sydney .... For the Bank of New South Wales', back with TEN in bevelled rectangular block in the centre and geometric ovals in corners, brown/red on white, with circular postal franking 'Hurstville NSW Sp 1, 1906' and perforated twice 'Paid 14.9.23', (Vort-Ronald, Type seven, comments on bank and type p.67-85, similar notes but twenty pounds illustrated Fig.81 [p.80]). Nearly very fine and very rare, probably unique in private hands with a straight serial number.

The Commercial Bank of Australia Limited, Melbourne, Specimen one pound uniface, not dated, (but date hand written upper left in pencil July 21, 84), numbered No.A750001-A800000, unsifgned, perforated 'Specimen B W & Co London', watermarked, floral lined frame around with Chinese script on each side, imprint of 'Sands & McDougall, Stationers, Melbourne', vignette in centre of seated female on wharf, with globe and winged caduceus, and ornamental oval tablet with '£1' lower left, on upper right and left 'ONE', states below, 'I Promise to pay the Bearer on Demand the Sum of One Pound here Value received Melbourne. For the Commercial Bank of Australia Limited', with brown 'ONE POUND' across centre, brown and black on white, (Vort-Ronald, comments on bank and type p.133-5, similar unissued note illustrated for £100, Fig. 140 [p.133], issued note in Nicholson Collection [lot 1560]). Nearly uncirculated and extremely rare.

Johnston Edinh. for Cowan & Coy Sydney', with vignettes of females grouped in top corners and in centre the bank building in Sydney, all within rectangular ornate spiral border, red-brown rectangular block with FIVE inside it, red-brown and blue on white, (New England Hoard No. 29 [Report of ANS 1974 yearbook, pp 49-68], Vort-Ronald, p.142-152 on bank, similar note illustrated as Fig.153). Folds, ragged edge and creases, centre cut in two and rejoined by paper tape, with some aging tone, otherwise nearly fine, and rare.

Engravers & C, London', with vignette in framed oval wreath, the head of Queen Victoria and with 5 in all corners and sides in circular and oval framed tablets, FIVE POUNDS at top and bottom, all within rectangular ornate border, the back plain. (Vort-Ronald, p.204-207 on bank, and similar note but one pound, illustrated as Fig.212, cf.Nicholson example of ten pounds Sale 49B [lot 1600]). Corner cut at angle, repairs to edge and central area, otherwise nearly extremely fine and extremely rare.

Union Bank of Australia, specimen five pounds, issued at Melbourne but not dated (c.late 1830's), not signed, printed on card, with imprint on centre of bottom, 'Perkins Bacon & Petch, London, Patent Hardened Steel Plate', with vignettes of Queen Victoria to left, and Britannia Kangaroo and ship as central vignette, black on white, (Vort-Ronald, p.223-230 on bank, five pound forgery note of similar type illustrated fig, 227, Tomlinson p.101 illustrates one pound note of type). Worn base edge, water stains and minor tears, corner missing and edge repairs, some aging tone, otherwise very fine, very rare and the earliest known type note of this bank.
