Vertical tear left side, otherwise complete very fine and extremely rare, interesting as a No.1 note, the first of this type we have handled.

Bill of exchange, £32.10.0, New Norfolk, Van Diemen's Land, April 2nd 1818, Twelve Months after Date I Promise to Pay to Mr.Dennis M'Carty , or Order, the Sum of Thirty-Two pounds Ten Shillings Sterling, for Value received. Eitnefs W.Burks Joseph Marshall/ X his mark and Robt. Chambers X his mark. A nearly completely printed form, stamp hinges on back corners, six lines of red ink wiritng to cross note (to extinguish entitlement?) otherwise good extremlely fine and unique, the only currency intrument known from this town.

Hopwood's Ferry, Murray River, Echuca, Victoria, one pound entered J.W.Mann, but not issued payable by William Nicholson & Co, 13 Flinders St., Melbourne, 186-, scene printed on back, imprint of Calvert, depicts Hopwood's Ferry at Pontoon Bridge Hotel in background with brothel (see Mira 'From Riverboat to Ironhorse' 1990 p4). Centre fold otherwise nearly extremely fine with only three tiny tone or foxing spots extremely rare, two others similar are known (Nicholson Sale 49B lot 1632 and Stern Sale 1977 lot 275).

Trimmed to border, many folds, creases and tears, stuck down (as usual) to thick backing paper or card, fair and excessively rare, the only known example of this denomination.
