Ancient Roman footrule, foldable with catch pins and lamella to maintain the rule unfolded, outside of the square cross section rule is divided by punch marks into sixteen Greek digiti (fingers) or 18.3mm; the inside is divided into four Greek palmi (palms) or 72-74mm; a third side is divided into twelve Roman unciae (inches) or 24mm and has an inscription; fourth side is also inscribed; length 293mm, folded 148mm, cross section 3-3.5mm. Age patination, fine for period.

China, belt-hooks, in bronze 70 and 55mmn, from the 2nd century B.C., each with inlay in silver as a design of a geometric pattern, each with internal knuckle to hook onto end of belt and a hook to catch the other end, (See article in Art and Antiques, October 29, 1977, Vol. 29, 11). Hunting horn with scrimshaw, c1830s, made from a buffalo horn (370mm long), depicting the name, 'Wm.Kerby/IVth/King's Own Regimt', also a three-masted English galleon, English Royal arms, a woman sitting astride a barrel of brandy, a Union Jack flag, a mermaid with a hand-held mirror, various floral decorations and a kangaroo in the style of early 19th century drawings of same. Very fine and rare early Australiana item.
