Charles II, (1660-1685). Large silver medal commemorating King Charles landing at Dover in 1660. The start of the restoration of the Stuart monarchy. Diam. 57mm. Edge: plain. Legend in Latin "If God is my keeper who shall be my enemy". Obverse features a finely executed bust of the monarch by famed coinage artist John Roettiers. The portrait of the King has long hair, drapery around the shoulders, a large cravat bow and insignia, all enclosed within branches of laurel formed into an elaborate circle. Upper legend reads: DEUM. PROVIDENTIA. ATQ. MISERICORDIA. VIVO (`I live by the providence and mercy of God'). Lower legend reads: ANNO. RESERATAE. SALUTIS. 1660. DIE. 29. MAII (`In the year of renewed safety. 1660. 29 May') Below is the small neat monogram of Roettier. Outer legend: CAROLUS. II. D. G. MAGN: BRITANN: FRANC: ET. HIBERN: REX:, Reverse shows a ship approaching the coast where 3 warriors (representing England, Scotland and Ireland) await its arrival. Symbolically, in the distance a young oak tree grows from the remains of an old one. The eye of providence beams over the whole scene, (MI i, p. 457 no. 48. Eimer 211). Toned, die crack across head, otherwise extremely fine or better, rare.

Charles II, (1660-1685), large silver medal. 1672. by Philip Roettiers. 59mm diameter. Known as the `Liberty of Conscience' medal. Dies in British Museum (legend in Latin "Defender of the Faith, Protector of the Reformed Obverse: Draped bust of King Charles II with short hair, facing right. Mantle fastened with small brooch on right shoulder. Legend: OPTIMO. PRINCIPI. CAROLO. II. D.G.M.BRIT.FRAN.ET.HIB.REGI. (`To the most excellent Prince, Charles II, by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland). Below is Roettier's signature. Reverse: Female figure sitting on a plinth with the inscription `LIBERTAS' holding a sword and cornucopia in one hand and a book inscribed FIDES in the other hand. The legend reads FIDEI. DEFENSORI. RELIGIONIS. REFORMATAE. PROTECTORI (Defender of the Faith, Protector of reformed religion'), (Eimer 249, MI i, 553-4/214). Toned, extremely fine or better, rare.

Charles II, Christ's Hospital, Mathematical Medal, 1673, in silver (57mm) by John Roettiers from dies now housed in the British Museum. Probably a medal given to a few star pupils and dignitaries after the foundation of the Royal Mathematical School in Christ's Hospital (School). Obverse features a laureate pointed bust of the King with long hair and no drapery. This is a larger and more detailed version of Roettier's spectacular `Guinea head' which graces the early gold coinage of Charles II. Obverse legend reads: CAROLVS. SECVNDVS. DEI. GRATIA. MAG. BRI. FRAN. ET. HIB. REX., Reverse shows a mathematical diagram which appears to give the rule for determining the point of the ravelin (a triangular fortification or detached outwork) in front of the bastions of a fortress, (Eimer -, MI i, 559/221). Bright, extremely fine or better and rare.

James II,(1685-1688). Silver medal featuring Archbishop Sancroft and the seven bishops by George Bower. 51 mm diameter. Raised edge lettering. Obverse has a bust of Sancroft facing right wearing a cap and religious robing. Reverse features six medallions with cameo portraits of the imprisoned bishops, around that of the Bishop of London. This pleasantly toned piece is a significantly better preserved medal than most of the other specimens which appear in the marketplace. (MI p.622 No.37, Eimer 288). Toned, extremely fine or better, scarce.

Mary II, (1688-1694) Large silver medal struck upon the death of Queen Mary 1694, Diam. 60mm. Edge plain. Obverse, bust of Mary II facing right (wearing tiara with hair bound by strings of pearls) by I. Boskam (Jan Boskam). Reverse, a monument of three gradations, decorated with a detailed scene representing the royal funeral procession. Seated above are the three fates: Clotho presides over Mary's birth, Lachesis with a spindle twists her threads of life, and Atropos with scissors cuts the thread in two when her life has run its course. The legend above is: VNICA DIGNO DEO (`Worthy alone of God') and in small letters below: VIVIT. POST. FVNERA. VIRTVS. MDCXCV (`Virtue survives the tomb,) The date of 1695 is based on the old calendar. This is a wonderfully well preserved and very rare medal with a deep blue/grey patination. One is accustomed to seeing the conjoined busts of William (III) and Mary (II) as joint monarchs, and a large silver piece such as this is difficult to obtain. This medal is much rarer than the coins of this celebrated monarch. (MI p. 114, No. 349, Eimer -). Toned, extremely fine or better.

Anne, Queen Anne's Bounty, 1704, in silver (45mm) by John Crocker, Obverse: Laureate bust of the Queen facing left, with lovelocks behind and on the right shoulder. The Queen is wearing an elaborate gown. At the edge of the mantle are the initials I.C. for John Crocker. Reverse: Anne is seated on her throne, presenting a charter to her clergy who are kneeling before her. The legend reads PIETAS AVGVSTAE (`The Piety of the Queen'), (Eimer 404, MI ii, 251-2/43). Toned, extremely fine or better and scarce.

Anne, (1702-1714), Large silver medal 1707 by John Crocker celebrating the Union of England and Wales. Obverse: Crowned and draped bust of Queen facing left wearing gown decorated with pearls, mantle and collar. 70mm. Legend: ANNA.DEI.GRATIA.MAG.BRITAN.FRA.ET.HIB.REGINA. Reverse: a statue of the Queen as Pallas bearing a spear and a shield. The significance is that Anne is depicted as the Palladium or defence of the newly unified Kingdom, (Eimer 423, MI ii, 298/115). Toned, extremely fine or better and scarce.

George I, (1714-1727), The Order of the Bath revived, 1725, in silver (47mm) by John Crocker, Obverse: A finely detailed laureated portrait of the King facing right, akin to the coinage portraits featured on the (fifth head) guinea and (second head) half guinea. Reverse: A four year old Prince William standing, facing, dressed as a Knight of the Bath. Edge plain, (Eimer 501, MI ii, 463 No.75). A fascinating piece of early 18th century British history, a scarce medal, deeply and attractively toned, extremely fine or better.

Obverse: Draped bust of Fox (by medallist and coinage designer Webb) facing right, with legend marking the date of his death (September 13th 1806). Reverse: The winged figure of Victory holds two wreaths astride a globe with a map of England. The legend LIBERTATIS. HVMANITATISQVE. George III, (1760-1820), Silver medal by Thomas Wyon for the Manchester Pitt Club. 49mm. Contained in a perfectly preserved neat glazed frame bound by a silver band, this medal is exquisitely detailed with frosted or matt surfaces beginning to tone at the periphery. Obverse: Draped, haughty bust of Pitt facing left. Reverse: Pitt cajoling Britannia to defeat anarchy emerging from the underworld. One of the best preserved examples of this medal extant, (Eimer 1039, BHM 771). Within a glass circular frame with attached suspension ring, extremely fine.
