Government House, Hobart Town, Van Diemens Land Police Fund, Edward Foord Bromley, Treasurer of the Police Fund, Government police fund bill, fourteen pounds, 23 June 1821 (182 printed), No.185, to E.F. Bromley, hand signed by Lt. Governor William Sorell, black on white, watermarked paper with crude Britannia with shield on waves in oval on side, with additional four horizontal lines. Extensive paper toning particularly on the reverse, otherwise nearly very fine and extremely rare, being on of only two known in private hands.

Bank of Van Diemen's Land, Hobart Town, five pounds, [altered from one pound], July 1 1832 (year 18 printed), No. 9349, hand signed by W. Bunster and Charles McLachlan on printed form without imprint but believed to be engraved by Thomas Bock, black on white, on unwatermarked paper, sheep and ships scene upper left, in black ink, across note text including date October 20, 1832, on back three lines of text, (Vort-Ronald [p.108-112]). Large segment of corner missing and many holes throughout note, rough edges all around the note, some stain marks on the back, otherwise poor-good and extremely rare.

Bunster and Charles McLachlan on printed form without imprint but believed to be engraved by Thomas Bock, black on white, on unwatermarked paper, sheep and ships scene upper left, in black ink, on back Mr Johnston, (Vort-Ronald [p.108-112]). Large segment of corner missing, rough edges and reinforced on back with new backing on portion of the note, some minor stain marks on the back, otherwise nearly fine, the note overall except for tear and holes, being in better than average condition for this period, very rare.

Commercial Bank, Hobart Town, Van Diemens Land, one pound, forgery in Indian ink, 1 July 1835 (year 18 printed), No. 1351, forged hand signatures of John Dunn (founder of the bank) and Wm. Gellibrand, copied from an original note, black on white, on unwatermarked paper, vignette of standing figure, in black ink, on front additional initials and date '11 Oct 41' in two places and 'Exhibited in the Reprieve(?) Court in Reg v. Watkins this 20th October 1841', and on back in black ink 'Produced Police Office Oct 11/41. and additional '20 Febry 1836 Exhibited in the prosecution of Eugene McCarthy this day' and signed by an uncertain signature, also additional uncertain words on back in black ink, (Vort-Ronald [p.138-141]). Missing corner and some edges, minor pin-holes and edge splits, otherwise nearly fine, believed to be unique, and of great historical interest.

The Derwent Bank, Hobart, Van Diemens Land, twenty pounds, [altered from one pound], 1 June 1832 (18 printed), No.4849, hand signed by Cedric Swanston and Stephen Adey, on printed form and at base imprint, 'Perkins & Bacon, London, Pat. and hardened Steel Plate', black-brown on white, on unwatermarked paper, arms of Hobart upper left all within rectangular spiral border, in black ink, on front additional initials and date '11 Oct 41' in two places and on back 'Produced Police Office Oct. 11/41, Exhibited in the Supreme Court in Reg: v Watkins(?) this 20th October 1841, No.3 (signed) E.M.Hodgson' also an uncertain pair of signatures, (MVR p.154-5). Uneven worn edges, many folds and some stain marks on the back, otherwise nearly fine, the note overall being in better than average condition for this period.

Brown & Sons debit to Askin Morrison to the 'Mariposa'; and another dated January 22, 1857 to the 'Mariposa' Dr. to Ellis Williams to the Capt.& Owners of the 'Mariposa'. An extremely rare example of this early bank, as no banknotes are known to have survived. Two folds, extremely fine and extremely rare.

The River Don Trading Company, River Don, Tasmania, issued at River Don, twenty two shillings and sixpence, currency note, dated 16 Jany 1889 (18-printed), No.129, no watermark, circular value tablets in upper corners, vignette of industrial and farminf scene, no imprint but a possible product of Aikenhead & Button Launceston, stating on front 'On Demand please pay Bearer the sum of TWENTY TWO SHILLINGS & SIXPENCE Stg. Manager Bank of Van Diemans Land, Launceston, signed William Shaw Secretary and John Henry Manager, impressed with Tasmania duty stamp for one penny, and stamped with oval bank stamp of the Commercial Bank of Tasmania, Latrobe, red counter stamp FORMBY on left hand side for the township of Formby, red on white. Holes on creases, edge tears, folds, otherwise nearly fine and very rare for this denomination.

Lot 2828 Sale 67 Private Bank Issues

New South Wales postal notes (1892), specimen set in original blue presentation folder, for one shilling, one shilling and sixpence, two shillings and sixpence, three shillings, four shillings, five shillings, seven shillings and sixpence, ten shillings, fifteen shillings, twenty shillings, overprinted SPECIMEN in orange diagonally on each note. These notes were printed by Charles Potter, Government Printer, Sydney. The only other set known is owned by the Post Office Archives and is on loan to the Powerhouse Museum. Possibly these were prepared for the Columbian Exposition, Chicago, U.S.A., 1892-3. Uncirculated and extremely rare.
