Seaman's Advance Note, issued at Hobart Town, January 22, 1857, for two pounds, 'Three days after the Ship 'Mariposa' has Sailed from Hobart Town pay to John Dunn or Order, the Sum of 'two' pounds, provided he has Sailed in the above named Vessel, being an Advance on an intended Whaling Voyage as per Agreement with Astin Morrison Esq. New Wharf, signed Mr. Croncher (?) Commander'; together with Supply List, Hobart, 21st July 1856 from Mafs. W. Brown & Sons debit to Askin Morrison to the 'Mariposa'; and another dated January 22, 1857 to the 'Mariposa' Dr. to Ellis Williams to the Capt.& Owners of the 'Mariposa'. Tears, creases and pinholes, in the advance note, otherwise nearly fine and rare, supply lists very fine, all rare. (3)
The 'Mariposa' was a 190 ton schooner, it is listed as having voyages from Victorian Ports in the period 1851-1855. The Tasmanian voyages indicated by the documentation extend from 1856-1857.
