Lot 836 Sale 57 Greek Silver & Bronze

Sicily, Gela, (c.440-430 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.51 grams), obv. slow quadriga driven right by male charioteer holding reins, Nike above crowning horses, dotted border, rev. forepart of man headed bull to right with long beard, weakly above **GELAS, (cf.S.795, Jenkins 379, obv. 77, rev. 156 [notes fourteen examples known of these dies], SNG ANS 72). Has porosity in fields, but a distinctive pair of dies, very fine/nearly very fine and a scarce die combination.

Light obverse porosity in right field, otherwise very fine and rare.

Some dark spotting on the reverse, otherwise good very fine and rare.

Sicily, Selinus, (c.445-435 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.02 grams), obv. slow quadriga driven right by Apollo and Artemis standing side by side, holding bow and arrow, rev. Selinus the river god standing facing, head to left, with phiale over altar, sacrificial cock standing before to right, bull to left on pedistal inscribed A incuse, selinon leaf above, traces of **SELINONTION around, (cf.S.907, Schwabacher, [Mitt. der Bayerischen Num. Gesell. Vol. XLIII, 1925] No.20, dies, obv. 5; rev. 17 [notes only five examples known from these dies]). Pitted mostly around the edge on the obverse and reverse, otherwise nearly very fine/very fine and rare.

Toned, good very fine/very fine and very scarce. $$ Boehringer notes only eight specimens from these dies.

XIII, [lots 343-5 same dies]). Very porous flan, double struck on the reverse, otherwise nearly very fine, rare, dies of the finest style.

Uneven flan with large piece of extra silver attached, some original mint bloom, weak in places, otherwise extremely fine and very scarce.

Macedon, kingdom of Philip II, (359-336 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (14.42 grams), Amphipolis III mint, issued c. 323/2-316/5 B.C., obv. head of Zeus laureate to right, dotted border, rev. naked youth or small man (Philip II), on horseback to right, aplustre below, monogram of **P dot on right, above **FILIP [POU]*. (cf.S.6683, Le Rider Pl.46, [p.124]). In high relief, off centred on the obverse, test gash on reverse, otherwise round with attractive pale grey tone, good very fine and rare.

Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, MTP monogram in wreath to left, **KL under throne, to right **ALEXANDROU, **BASILEWS in exergue, (cf.S.6713, Price 3713, BMC 3713, M.717). Well centred, as struck with mint bloom on the reverse on the reverse, good extremely fine, rare thus.

Athena enthroned to left, supporting Nike, spear behind, AP monogram to left over bee, fulman in exergue, to left **BASILEWS*, to right **LUSIMAXOU*, (cf.S.6814, Thompson 159 [pl.22, 247 same obverse die]). Lightly double struck on legend, a marvelous portrait of Alexander, redolent of the famous 'K' tetradrachms of Pergamon, almost extremely fine/good very fine and rare.
