Lot 3089 Sale 59 Private Bank Issues

Promissory Note of G.Blaxcell, handwritten and dated July 13th 1812 for two hundred and fifty pounds sterling in good government bills, payable to Captain Joseph James on or before 24th September 1812. Accompanied by a printed form of a notice of protest, dated 16th August 1813 and signed by Ellis Bent, Judge Advocate of the Territory of New South Wales showing that Blaxcell had not paid his promissory note. Stained on right hand side, good fine and extremely rare.

Lot 3090 Sale 59 Private Bank Issues

Treasury Bill by the Depty Commissary General's Office, Sydney New South Wales, 24th September 1818 for pounds sterling 700.0.0 to the order of Thomas Macvitie Esq. No.1076 and handsigned by Deputy Commissary General, David Allen and approved by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. On official 'crown' international parchment with the impressed Seal of the Bank of New South Wales, has been impressed. One of the earliest Colonial Treasury Bills known and of the highest rarity. Large section of the bottom of the note missing, but does not affect the design and signatures, otherwise fine and very rare.

Van Diemen's Land, one shilling promissory note payable in the notes of the Bank of Vans Dieman's Land, unissued form dated Hobart Town 182_ (1824-6). A similar note for sixpence. Both late 19th century printings on unwatermarked plain white paper from the original plates. Together with an old envelope inscribed in black ink '2 Tasmanian Currency Notes'. Very fine. (2)

Lot 3095 Sale 59 Private Bank Issues

Cornwall Bank, Launceston (Cornwall County), Van Diemen's Land, one pound, dated Feb, 1, 1831, (183 printed), numbered 7338, signatures on note are Richard Dry (foundation director of the bank 1828-1836) and William Effington Lawrence (Bank Chairman 1828-1836), and made out to James Ranken, all on paper, unwatermarked (?), note printed on copper plates by Thomas Bock of Hobart, imprint of 'Bock sct Hobart' to left under cartouche on left, uniface, black on browned white paper, (Vort-Ronald, comments on bank and type p.153). Many folds and creases, rough edges stiftened with fresh paper on frayed edges, with additional tone and staining marks, many pin-holes, otherwise good - very good and excessively rare if not unique as an issued note from this bank.

Australian Wool Company, Sydney, one pound (payable at The Royal Bank of Australia, Sydney), not dated except 184-, printer's proof, on 'AUSTRALIAN WOOL COMPANY' watermarked paper, imprint on the lower margin 'W.H. Bruce, Engraver and Printer Trump Street Cheapside' vignette of sheep with AWCo on back of ewe, all with rectangular scrolled border, black on white, (Vort-Ronald p.208-9, details of bank, but Australian Wool Company not known). Much paper toning, one large hole, and other small holes, otherwise nearly fine and excessively rare, being the only known specimen.

The Royal Bank of Australia, one pound, Sydney 184-, imprint 'W.H. Bruce Engraver and Printer, Trump Street, King Street, Cheapside', unissued note form (cf MVR fig 217 and Nicholson Sale lot 1601). Creases, minor centre hole and minor tears otherwise good fine and extremely rare. $$ This is a recently discovered example of these interesting notes with interest bearing details and a counterfoil margin on left hand side. It was issued by the Bank founded by Ben Boyd of whaling fame.

Bank of Australasia, Beechworth, five pounds, dated 3rd Oct. 1864, (date fully printed), not numbered, proof, unsigned, in margin in pencil, '23rd May 1864, in place of plate altered', on paper, no watermark, imprint of 'Perkins Bacon & Co. London Patented Hardened Steel Plate'. (Vort-Ronald, Type two (a), comments on bank and type p.57-63, similar issued note illustrated Fig. 58 [p.60] but £1, five examples similar [one of exact date], and this town in the Spink Perkins Bacon Archive sale lots 213-6). Corners missing, light stains in margins, otherwise extremely fine and rare.

Bank of New South Wales, one pound, emergency issue, issued at Sydney, 15th May, 1893, No.A 077181, hand signed by Manager John Potts and entered by P.Allen?, watermarked paper, with imprint in centre of bottom, 'John Sands, Sydney', temporary design with 1 within squares in corners, on a rectangular framed ornate tablet with 'New South Wales' on edge, across back diagonally in orange 'The Bank of New South Wales', black on white, orange diagonal, (Vort-Ronald, p.67-85 on bank, and similar note illustrated as Fig.80, without 1's in corner, Renniks MVR 9). Folds and creases, missing portions of edging on two sides, large tear across half of the note, and many other smaller tears, otherwise nearly very good and excessively rare, the only note ever offered for sale.

Payable also in Adelaide (cf Nicholson lot 1631) (see Mira, W.J.D., 'From Riverboat to Iron Horse' MCC, Sydney 1990, p.16). Trimmed to border, many folds, creases and tears, stuck down (as usual) to thick backing paper or card, fair and excessively rare, the only known example of this denomination.
