MESOPOTAMIA, Edessa, Gordian III and King Abgar X, (A.D. 238-244), AE 32, (19.15 grams), issued 242-4, obv. laureate head of Gordian III to right, around AVTOK K M ANT **GORDIANO*C CEB, rev. Gordian holding sceptre seated to right, receiving Abgar who stands left before him holding Nike in left hand before him, around AVTOK **GORDIANO*C AB**GA*ROC BACI**L*EVC, (S.5743, BMC 138 [p.113], Mabbott 2923 [This Coin]). Fine and rare.

Ex Thomas Ollive Mabbott Collection, sold Hans M.F. Schulman, New York, auction, June 6-11, 1968 (lot 2923, illustrated it realised US$47) and Spink & Son, London (with their ticket). The restoration of the kingdom by Gordian III was short-lived, his successor made Edessa a colony once again.
