Lot 1738

Sale 60 · An Important Collection of Australian Banknotes, Australian & World Coins

Description

Italy, Campania, Hyria, (c.395-385 B.C.), silver stater or nomos, (7.033 grams), obv. head of Hera Lakinia facing three-quarter to right, wearing broad stephanos, rev. man-headed bull to right, above [YI]DIN[A], single exergue line, (cf.S.294 [£350], Rutter 129 [obv. die 47, rev. die 115]). Reverse slightly off centre, otherwise fine/very good and very rare.

See note above. Only two examples are known from this die combination and both are in the Paris Bib. Nat. Museum collection. This obverse die was also used for the very rare issues of the city of Fensernai, an interesting example of die transference.
