Group of Four: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal; Coronation Medal 1911; Royal Shipwreck Relief Humane Society of N.S.W. Medal (Silver). 2871 Pte E.L.Atkins Cml Cps A.I.F. on first two medals, E.L.Atkins For Saving Life Sydney Harbour 3rd June 1907 on last medal. First two medals impressed, third medal unnamed, last medal engraved. Very fine.
R.S.R.H.S. of N.S.W. - 'Edwin Leonard Atkins, aged 12 years - on 3rd June 1907, a little boy named Harold Atkins, aged 8, accidently fell into the Harbour at Hungry Bay, North Sydney, at a spot where the water is deep and the rocks steep, when his brother, Leonard, without hesitation jumped in, fully dressed, and reaching his little brother managed with great difficulty to get him to land. He became thoroughly exhausted with his efforts and suddenly collapsed floating face downwards, but was rescued from his perilous position by Sub-Lieutenant Bracegirdle who arrived on the scene in an Oil launch. After half an hour's continuous efforts animation was restored in the apparently lifeless body'. WWI.: Enl 7Feb1917 Emb 10May1917 RTA 13Mar1919.
