Description

Attica, Athens, (166-57 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.9 grams), issued 165-4 B.C., (Thompson date) but probably 133-132 B.C. (revised chronology), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right wearing triple-crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasus, rev. owl standing to right, head facing, in erect posture, on prostrate amphora, to left a winged caduceus, legend across **A QE POLU CARMO NIKOG FANO KLE, DI below, A on amphora, all within wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 368 variant [this obverse die]). Double struck on the obverse, otherwise extremely fine and very rare.

The third Magistrates name is not noted by Thompson in conjunction with the other two. However he is noted on a drachm on the previous year. The obverse die was used in the previous year and this is die-linked to the first issue of the next year. No issues except for this example is reported for that first month of these Magistrates.
