Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880, in silver (51mm) (92.8 grams), by H. Stokes (cf.C.1880/18) edge inscribed 'Sir Henry Barkly G.C.M.G., K.C.B. for services'. Dark toned with edge knock, otherwise extremely fine.

Sir Henry Barkly (1815-1898) was governor of Victoria from 1856 - 1863. He was founder and President of the Royal Society of Victoria and helped found the National Gallery, Acclimatization Society and the National Observatorty. He was governor of Mauritius from 1863-1870 and from 1870 governor of the Cape of Good Hope and recalled in March 1877. In 1879 nominated to the Royal Commission on colonial defence and was given this medal (sent to London) for services rendered to that state some twenty years earlier.
