Lot 2761

Sale 58 · Important Australian Coins & Banknotes, The W.J.Noble Collection of British Tokens

Description

Thornthwaite, J.C., Sydney silver threepence, 1854 the plain three without crown, (A.-, Heyde 250/5 = R10 [of highest rarity]). Toned and nearly very fine and excessively rare.

This type not in Andrews was first published by Heyde from his specimen, which was fine with surface knocks. A pattern strike of these dies occurs on a copper halfpenny blank, which was sold in Spink Australia Auctions Sale 29 (lot 2940). This is probably the third known example of the silver threepence.
