Lanarkshire,Dalzell,A.J. Hamilton's Dalzell Farm no value stated, a French Napoleon Emperor five francs of Bayonne Mint, 1813 countermarked with 'Payable at Dalzell Farm' in a circle on the reverse of the host coin (Davis 74). Coin very fine, countermark good very fine and rare.
Ex Lord Hamilton's Collection (lot ) (from Spink October 1957). Twenty-four coins known with this countermark. Alexander Hamilton (1793-1834) served with 4th Dragoons at Waterloo. Whilst in Belgium he was impressed with the Belgian farming system and with the advice of Robert Owen applied this knowledge with success on his Dalzell estates. He brought a consignment of five francs back and used these in a suitably countermarked form to pay his farmworkers (see Walter Allen and Harry Manville notes to Spink Sale 34 catalogue).
