Syria, Kingdom of, Antiochus III, (219-217 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.66 grams), Series III, Tyre mint, issued 197-187 B.C., obv. diademed head of Antiochus III to right in high relief, rev. Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and bow, on right, **BASILEWS and to left **ANTIOXOU, in exergue club, A to left, NK monogram to right, (cf.S.6936, Newell WSM 1266, Naville sale X, 933 same dies, Series III issues used all the same obverse die). Attractive dark tone, large broad flan, extremely fine, the finest known of this very rare mint type.
Newell notes a total of 3 tetradrachms of this type in public and private collections. ACNAC Houghton did not own a Tyre mint tetradrachm of Antiochus III.
