Visit of the US Naval Fleet, United States of America Navy Celebration Reception, Victoria, Aug 1908, in gold and enamel (15ct, 38x22mm), by Stokes (C.1908/18), engraved on reverse 'Hon E.H.Cameron M.P.'. Nearly extremely fine.
Ewen Hugh Cameron (1831-1915) builder, store keeper and politician. Born in Kilmonivag, Scotland in 1831 he arrived in Australia in 1853 aged 22.
Initially, he worked for his brothers in construction before becoming a storekeeper.
Cameron became MLA for Evelyn (Victoria) 1874-1914 and over time held the parliamentary positions of Minister for Mines and Water Supply 1902-1904 and Minister of Public Health 1904. He was Vice President of the Board Land & Works 1904-1908, member of the Railway Standing Committee 1894-1902 and 1909-1914 and Chairman of the State Committee arranging the welcome of the American Fleet to Melbourne.
