Lot 1342

Sale 139 · Important Australian, British, World, and Ancient Coins, Banknotes, and Medals

Description

S.A.G. Departmental Currency, one mark, in bronze (23mm), uniface. Toned very fine and scarce.

S.A.G. (South Australian Government) Departmental Currency was used at the Magill Boys Reformatory in the suburb of Magill in Adelaide that operated from 1891 right through to 1967. The word Mark is not related to German origins but rather to `Mark' awarded to boys for good behaviour. There are higher value tokens that use the word `Marks'. The token being offered was believed to have been used from about 1900 to 1910.
