Description

Her Majesty's Troopship Queen Mary, 1941, brass nut (40x47x23mm), from a bolt on the Queen Mary, fitted with the reverse of an English 1938 penny on one side and the obverse of an Australian George V penny on the other side, around the top edge of the nut on the English coin side is impressed, 'H M T QUEEN MARY 1941'. Very fine.

In 1940 the Queen Mary left New York to travel to Sydney, Australia where she was refitted as a troopship to carry Australian and New Zealand soldiers to England. The Queen Mary and her sister ship, Queen Elizabeth, were the largest and fastest troopships in the war and were capable of transporting more than 10,000 troops per voyage at speeds which made them virtually untouchable by enemy ships and submarines.
