Pair: War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. NX171 A.G.Torr. Both medals impressed. The first medal without ribbon, otherwise good very fine.

Alexander George Torr, born 08Apr1907 at Newtown, Sydney, NSW; served in Cadets and was then commissioned in 19Bn (Militia) Jan1926; Trf to Royal Aust Engineers (Militia) Apr1932; Enl.31Oct1939 in AIF at Sydney, NSW; Emb.Jan1940 for Middle East as CO 2nd/1st Field Coy; led from the front at the battles of Bardia and Tobruk; led his unit in the campaigns in Greece and Crete where he was senior Australian engineering officer; to T/Lt-Col 02Sep1941 and appt'd general staff officer grade 1 at AIF Hqs Middle East; RTA May1942 and was chief engineer of NG Force Jan-Sep1943 and May-Jul1944, of I Corps Sep1943-Apr1944, II Corps Apr-May1944, First Army Aug1944-May1945; to T/Brig 01Jan1943; oversaw planning for the Huon Peninsula ops Sep-Oct1943; finished his war service as deputy engineer-in-chief AMF; Disch.21Feb1946 as Brigadier, Land Headquarters and transferred to Reserve of Officers 22Feb1946; returned to British-Australasian Tobacco as chief engineer and later became general manager of Gibson Battle & Co, a specialist power transmission business; died at the age of 45 of lung cancer 09Aug1952 at Heidelberg, Melbourne, Vic and was cremated.
