Sale 131 · Important Australian, British, World, and Ancient Coins, Banknotes, and Medals

Description

New South Wales, fifteen pence or dump, 1813, die struck contemporary counterfeit in copper (5.15g). Even brown patina, test punch mark on obverse, otherwise good fine/very fine and extremely rare.

Due to the lack of corrosion, as most known examples display, it is possible that this example is not from the Pitt Street Tank Stream find. This is possibly the finest known example notwithstanding the weakly struck area at the top of the obverse and the test punch mark at the top of the crown.
