France, Medaille des Vainquers de la Bastille (Medal of the Conquerers of the Bastille), 1789, in silver, obverse, a ring with two broken chains and below this an open padlock, more chains and two cannonballs, reverse, an upright sword passed through a laurel wreath, around the edge, 'Ignorant Ne Datos Ne Quisquam Serviat Enses' (Men do not know that the purpose of the sword is to save all from slavery) . No ribbon, very fine.

Proposed by the Commune 5Aug1789, authorised by decree of the National Assembly 01Sep1789. A gold medal was issued to those who actually took part in the attack.
