Pair to KIA on HMAS Sydney: 1939-45 Star; War Medal 1939-45. First medal unnamed, 24643. H.E.Thompson on second medal. Named medal impressed. The second medal with incorrect ribbon, good very fine - extremely fine.

Together with a brooch, fitted in the centre with a swivelling capsule, one side shows sailor wearing hat with tally band of H.M.A.S. Sydney and on the other side is a sailor wearing a hat with tally band for H.M.A.S. Cerberus.



Harry Edward Thompson, born 10Oct1922 at Carlton, Vic; Enl.27Nov1940 at Port Melbourne, Vic; KIA 20Nov1941, at age of 19, serving as Wireman on HMAS Sydney; commemorated on the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, panel 58, column 1.



HMAS Sydney II and its total crew complement were lost in the Indian Ocean after a battle with the German raider Kormoran on 19 Nov 1941 and the location of the ship remained unknown until its discovery only in recent times.



The other sailor in the brooch as described above is John David Thompson (R/33320), born 30Jul1924 at Carlton, Vic; Enl.26Mar1945 at Port Melbourne, Vic; Disch.25Mar1957 as ERA II ex HMAS Lonsdale.
