Description
Ancient British, North Thames Region, Eastern, Uninscribed coins, SS type, (c.52-47 B.C.), gold quarter stater, (1.27 g), obv. S in middle of field on slightly banded flan, rev. trophy-type motif with serpentine bar each side, L-shape below with ringed pellet on ends, 'cogwheel' sun above, ringed pellet either side, (S.-, ABC 2249, Van A -, NT 5-6, BMC -, M -, CCI 07.0409 [this coin]). Toned gold, bold trophy, well ornamented, good very fine - nearly extremely fine and extremely rare.
Private purchase from Chris Rudd, list 94, #41.
Found at Hockwold, Norfolk, 5/2/2007.
This quarter stater is excessively rare and is not listed in many standard works. Only 10 others have been recorded included one plated example. The S on the obverse presumably ties it to the SS type gold stater of the same time.
