Description
Ancient British, Western Region, Inscribed coins, Dobunni, Anted Rig Theta type, (c.20-43 A.D.), gold stater, (5.26 g), obv. tree-symbol on plain field, rev. triple-tailed horse to right, ANTED [RIC] around, two pellets, crescent and x's above, wheel and x below, (S.379, ABC 2066, Van A 1066, WE 8, BMC 3023-37, M 386). Nice rose gold, smooth surfaces, sharp tree and clear inscription, nearly extremely fine and very scarce.
Private purchase from Chris Rudd, list 113, #29.
The name above the horse ends with a Greek theta on this piece. It suggests that the name was pronounced Anteth, not Anted.
This is a splendid example of the Anted Rig (Theta type) gold stater with both obverse and reverse displaying stunning detail in striking and preservation. It is very rare in this condition.
