Description
Ancient Britain, Gallic War imports, (c.55-54 B.C.), Ambiani, uniface gold stater (6.34 g), obv. plain with traces of undertype, rev. M-shaped Celtic horse right, crescents, pellets and charioteer's arms above, large pellet and crescent below, oval shape in front and behind. (S.11, Sills class 1a, ABC 16 var, GB 5). Nearly extremely fine/extremely fine, good metal, well centred and boldly struck, a beautiful example.
Private purchase from Chris Rudd, list 97, #11.
Ex. R Tiegs Collection and previously Malter Galleries.
The heavy weight and bold charioteer's arms indicate that this is one of the earliest Gallic War Uniface gold staters. There are traces of an obverse bust from the tail end of the Gallo-Belgic Ca class 6 series.
