Alex (Alec) Gray was one of Northcote's most notable citizens, adept in many fields, sports, business and local government. He was an oustanding footballer and professional runner, playing 52 games for Melbourne before playing for Preston and then for Northcote in the VFA. He played 175 games for them in the 1920s and 1930s. Gray was Playing Coach of the 1936 Premiership team, Senior Team Captain with Harold Rumney in 1936 and 1938, and Senior Team Coach with Ralph Goulett in 1935. When his playing carrer was over Gray moved into administrative roles with Melbourne Football Club where he served as Secretary in 1948-49. Gray served as Councillor for Northcote, then as Mayor 1948-49.
