Jesse Owens (1913-1980) was an American track and field athlete who won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics thereby shattering Adolf Hitler's views of Aryan supremacy. One year earlier in the space of 45 minutes he broke three world records and tied another - a feat that will probably never be beaten. During his lifetime he was regarded as perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history.
