Sonderkarten der Westfront 1:250000, (Special maps of the Western Front 1: 250000th), I. Ostende-Arras, II. Laon-Reims, III. Reims-Verdun, IV. Toul-Nancy, V. Colmar-Belfort, by G. Winkler, Berlin, undated, format 12x19cm, canvas structured original paperback with 5-fold, multi-coloured cards, some maps with coloured pencil markings; Ye Berlyn Tapestrie, Wilhelm's Invasion of Flanders, by Hassall, John, published 1915, book format with one folded sheet to make 30pp mounted on wrapper; also an old b&w postcard of uniformed soldiers with postmark of Bremen 25.1.16. The last with some paper loss at edges, the second missing cover but fold story sheet fully intact, good - very fine. (3)
The first believed to have been captured from a German officer.
The second is John Hassall's satirical 1915 take on Kaiser Wilhelm's invasion of Belgium the previous summer. Hassall was an illustrator and pioneering ad man who responded in disgust to an official report on German atrocities in Belgium. Drawing on the iconic British representation of a foreign invasion - the 11th century Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Norman conquest of England - Hassall mocked the Germans down to size with his words and drawings.
