Description

R.M.S. Orvieto lapel brooch, in enamel and gilt. Very fine.

The Orvieto was requisitioned as a troop transport by the Australian Government. She was a part of the first convoy to leave Australia in November 1914 and carried on board officers and men of the AIF including Major General W.T. Bridges and his staff and official war correspondent C.E. Bean. When she reached Colombo she also took on board some prisoners from the SMS Emden that had earlier been sunk by HMAS Sydney, one of the convoy escorts.
