Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, type 3 reverse, - five clasps -Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. Major P.L.Murray, N.S.Wales M.R. Chisel engraved. Extremely fine.
Together with original matching miniature medal.
Major Pembroke Lathrop Murray was the son of Lt Colonel Pembroke Lathrop Murray, RAA (Ret.) who compiled and edited Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa, commonly referred to as 'Murray's'. During WWI Murray, a Major with the A. & I. Staff, applied for a commission in the AIF and was appointed to Sea Transport Service on 16Apr1917 CAG 65/17. He embarked at Sydney on A74 Marathon. His appointment was terminated on 21May1917 CAG 94/17 and he disembarked at Fremantle on 22May1917. On 09Feb1920 he was commissioned as T/Major in the Regular Forces of the British Army. A British War Medal 1914-18 and a Victory Medal 1914-19 were despatched to be issued to him however the issue was recalled after a review of his records showed that he had never left Australia.
