Description
Royal Humane Society, bronze medal (51mm) inscribed on reverse 'D.Dewar / Vit.ob.Serv / D.D. / Soc.Reg Hvm / 1843'. Extremely fine.
Case 14018: On 21 October 1843, Thomas and George Sindon were thrown into the sea when their boat was upset in the sea off New Romney. Henry Stock, Philip Power and D.Dewar rushed into the surf and rescued them in an exhausted state, an act for which each was voted a bronze medal. These were forwarded to the local Customs House for presentation. It is probable that all three rescuers were members of HM Coastguard. This is certainly the case for Powers, who was described as such in 1846 when he received a second award from the RHS.
