Description

Convict token, Great Britain cartwheel penny, 1797 with reverse removed and impressed, 'J.MASON', small hole at top for suspension. Coin poor, impression extremely fine.

John Mason was convicted of the offence of pickpocketing a handkerchief in Bridge Street, Blackfriars on 9 November 1836. His trial was held at London's Central Criminal Court on 28 November 1836; found guilty he was sentenced to be Transported for Seven Years. He was one of 240 convicts transported on the Elphinstone, leaving on 27 May 1837, place of arrival being Van Diemen's Land on 2 October 1837.
