Description

(Trajan Decius), in name of Titus (A.D. 79-81), restitution issue under Trajan Decius (A.D. 249-251), silver antoninianus, issued 250-251, Rome mint, (4.75 grams), obv. radiate head to right of Titus, around DIVO TITO, rev. lighted altar, CONSECRATIO around, (S.9464, RSC 405 [Titus], RIC 82b). Lightly toned with golden highlights, extremely fine and rare.

Ex Harlan Berk with ticket. Only two specimens recorded in the Dorchester Hoard. These restitution issues of Trajan Decius are of selected deified emperors and the contemporary judgement on past emperors made at this time excluded some like Claudius but included others such as Titus and suprisingly even Commodus. The typology of the series is uniform both for obverse style, the reverse legend and the subject theme. One of the most interesting commemorative series.
