Description
Augustus as Octavian, L. Pinarius Scarpus, moneyer, (31 B.C.), silver denarius, Cyrenaica mint, (3.62 grams), obv. AVGVR PONTIF, horned head of Jupiter Ammon right, rev. IMP CAESA[R] DIVI F in two lines to left and right of Victory standing right on globe, holding wreath and palm (S.-, RIC 535, Craw.546/4, Syd.1281, Bab.141, BMC 690). Slightly ragged edges, minor flan crack and traces of porosity, otherwise very fine and extremely rare.
Ex Harlan Berk with ticket. Scarpus was in charge of the province of Cyrenaica (Africa) under Antony before the battle of Actium. After Antony’s defeat he transferred his allegiance to Octavian and this coin shows his early attempt to curry favour with the young victor.
