Inspector-General of Police Vernon William Farquharson Hicks was born in 1897 and joined the Indian Police after service with the Royal Irish Regiment in WWI; he was taken POW in March 1918 and repatriated the following November; he became an Assistant Superintendent in Dec 1919 and full Superintendent Aug 1929; OBE Jan 1935, on depn under Govt of India (rly bd) for employment as supt, watch and ward dept, EN Rly, May 1936 to Aug 1939; temp Dep Inspr-Gen Prisons Feb 1943 to Aug 1944.
