David Livingstone (1813-1873) was a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer. He was obsessed with discovering the scource of the River Nile in Africa. He explored far and wide on the African Continent and gave the name to Victoria Falls. When he lost contact with the outside world a newspaper man, Morton Stanley, was sent to find the reclusive Livingston and on locating him uttered the now famous words, ’Dr Livingstone I presume.’ He died in North West Rhodesia of malaria in 1873.
