Description

Ceylon (Sri Lanka), base metal die for a railed tree of the type used by the Andhrabhrityas (Servants of the Andhras) in the Southern Deccan, The Chutus of Banavasi, c.A.D. 160-345, as used on making of lead double karshapana (cf.M.4972, cf.BMC Pl.VIII). Very fine and very rare.

The die type has similar characteristics but has fewer branches on the tree, suggesting a die used by a contemporary forger.
