STEPHEN, (1135-1154), silver penny, Watford type, issued c.1136-1145, BMC i, obv. inner circle around traces of ST[EIFNE: RE]X, rev. SIG[VERT: ON: LI]N (Sigvert of Lincoln), (S.1278, N.873, SCBI 27, 946 [has these letters and a similar obverse]). About as struck, with only a few letters visible, the attribution above is very tentative, otherwise fine and very rare.

Ex A.J. Gibbons Collection (from Stanley Gibbons, London, August 1977). There were five examples of this type in the Prestwich Hoard (Sotheby, December 6, 1974). None of these are exactly the same for visible reverse legend.
